You've found the blog of Jere Matlock, a web designer and writer. This journal is mostly about writing, web design and getting sites to the top of the search engines (SEO is my business). It is also full of opinions and observations about pretty much everything. If these things are not of interest to you, feel free to go now. Go on, shoo!

Still here? If you have something to say, post a comment or send me an email.

By the way, if you feel like taking offense at something posted on this site, go right ahead, it won't bother me a bit. Kingsley Amis has a nice quote about that, in which I take solace and some pride when the flames arrive:

"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

Antidepressants exposed on Fox News

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Here’s a great report from Sean Hannity of Fox News, about the dangers of giving kids anti-depressant drugs like Paxil.

Citizens Commission on Human Rights

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is a group to which I’ve belonged and which I’ve helped to support financially for about 35 years.

One of my nephews was put on psychiatric drugs as a teenager. He immediately quit being an honor student and star swimming athlete, and became a zoned-out zombie for the next five years, incapable of feeling much of anything. Frankly it was a terrifying experience for his mother (my sister) and the rest of our family. Why was he put on psych drugs? Because of the say-so of a school counselor …

Online advertising advice

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Question: I’m seeking reputable online advertising for my business; I tried Enhance interactive, but felt their service was poor, not big click rip-offs but very few customers were generated. Google is way over priced; At some times they’ve helped. But recently I quit them. I continue with Yahoo adwords, and recently signed up with Microsoft adCenter, but still wish to find more reputable online advertisers. Can you recommend any? I sell botanical products: seeds, herbs, and herbal extracts. – P.

Answer: Google Adwords, in my experience, tends to work better for higher-priced products or services, and not so well for …

Climate Change is a non problem…

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Quoting some common sense:

“Climate change is a non problem. The right answer to a non problem is to have the courage to do nothing. The UN conference is a complete waste of our time and your money and we should no longer pay the slightest attention to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).”

—UK climate researcher Lord Christopher Monckton

More on Specific vs. General Keywords

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Question:

Thanks so much for your prompt reply. I will input keywords for the PDF files.

I do have one last question: …. I read on your site and came across you saying that it’s better to have phrases than singular words for the keywords.

This seems to contradict what I have been reading about keywords on other sites. There was no mention about phrases being more effective. And when I check my competitors’ sites which rank high on Google search results, I noticed that they all use singular words.

So I am now a bit confused …

Scientology gains tax-exempt status in South Africa

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

After nearly three decades of being refused due to what can only be described as religious prejudice, the Church of Scientology has last week obtained tax-exempt status from South Africa, a fitting recognition for a religion that has done much to promote peace, education and morality in South Africa.

Here’s an article about Scientology in South Africa.

Germans & Scientology

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Well, things are getting crazy in Germany again – instead of banning Judaism as they did last century, they are trying to ban the Church of Scientology (which they’ve never recognized as a church despite its religious bonafides) out of pure old-fashioned NAZI-style bigotry.

For the truth about what Scientology is and does, go to www.scientology.org or to some of its many activities for social betterment, such as CCHR or Narconon, or its literacy crusade, or read any of the basic books …

Is Google indexing PDF files?

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Question: Hi, do any of the search engines search PDF files? Reason for asking is that the Adobe Acrobat has a Keywords field under the function Document Properties. So I’m just wondering if these keywords would be searchable by search engines? Else, I won’t waste time populating my PDF files with keywords! Thanks for your advice. I really like your site. It’s easy to understand and very useful for newbies like me. I used your html validators to clean up my html files.

Answer: Thanks for your kind words about our website.

Rankings lost due to domain ownership transfer

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

Question: I recently purchased a website from someone that had operated the business for 3 years and had at least top ten rank on most search engines. During the transfer of ownership the site was down for about ten days. I lost the excellent page rankings. Do you think this ranking will come back when re-spidered? Should I re-register with the search engines? How much do you charge for the search engine submission? Thanks
-J.

Answer: That is a bummer on the transfer taking ten days. Usually you can do those with no downtime at all; I’ve done that …

Spamdexing? Keywords Tag

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

Question: Am I Spamdexing?

I was wondering if you could advise me as to whether this would be considered spamdexing by search engines. The list below is my keywords tag. What do you think?

“weekend intensive Italian language course, learn to speak Italian, Italian
language course, language course intensive Italian, course intensive Italian
Language, course intensive Italian, learn Italian, learn Italian language” – D.

Answer: As long as you actually use all those words in the text of the body of your page (in see-able text humans can read), then you should be okay. Be aware that most …
