You've found the blog of Jere Matlock, a web designer and writer. This journal is mostly about writing, web design and getting sites to the top of the search engines (SEO is my business). It is also full of opinions and observations about pretty much everything. If these things are not of interest to you, feel free to go now. Go on, shoo!

Still here? If you have something to say, post a comment or send me an email.

By the way, if you feel like taking offense at something posted on this site, go right ahead, it won't bother me a bit. Kingsley Amis has a nice quote about that, in which I take solace and some pride when the flames arrive:

"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

Problem with DMOZ

Monday, October 24th, 2005

We’ve had a problem with DMOZ and its listing for McKeesport Candy Co.. Basically an old website existed, a new website was built, and the URL recorded at DMOZ needed to be changed. For the last 7 or 8 months we’ve been trying to get DMOZ to change the URL they showed for McKeesport Candy from the old to the new website. Within the last 24 hours, DMOZ has updated the listing for www.candyfavorites.com. It now has TWO listings:

Regional listing.

Now we’ll see how long it takes Google to reflect these changes at DMOZ. It …

Google is Dancing

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Google is Dancing. The Jagger update appears to be impacting some of my clients. For example, www.candyfavorites.com has fallen out of Google completely in the last 24 hours. If you search at Google today for www.candyfavorites.com, it gives you one of those “sorry, no information is available…” screens. However, if you search for

candyfavorites.com -site:www.candyfavorites.com

Google returns 50,300 known links and mentions of that site.

Until yesterday, the site www.candyfavorites.com had a Google PR of 3. Today it is gray-barred (no page rank info is available), when I check via Intenet Explorer’s toolbar. When I check on Firefox – the …

Wordsinarow.com is now a PR 6

Friday, October 21st, 2005

Very busy time for me – not a lot of time for blogging. Today I found out that my main website, www.wordsinarow.com has gained PageRank in the most recent updates at Google. Those are being called the “Jagger” update and seem to mostly be concerned with backlinks. Wordsinarow.com is now a PR 6. (Woohoo! That and $3.95 will get me a Latte Vente at Starbucks.)

BTW, in my experience the “link:” command at Google has been busted for about the last year. To find out the number of links to your site, you need to …

Fake page rank

Monday, October 10th, 2005

What the hell?!! There are some sites around that can FAKE PageRank. Here’s one: DarkSEO Team. That’s worse than faking an orgasm! They can’t do that, can they? (Someone’s tapping me on the arm…. Apparently, they can!)

And here is where you go to actually verify the PageRank of a website: SEO Logs PageRank Checker. Let’s hope the two of them are owned by different folks who never put their heads together.
