You've found the blog of Jere Matlock, a web designer and writer. This journal is mostly about writing, web design and getting sites to the top of the search engines (SEO is my business). It is also full of opinions and observations about pretty much everything. If these things are not of interest to you, feel free to go now. Go on, shoo!

Still here? If you have something to say, post a comment or send me an email.

By the way, if you feel like taking offense at something posted on this site, go right ahead, it won't bother me a bit. Kingsley Amis has a nice quote about that, in which I take solace and some pride when the flames arrive:

"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

Congrats to Narconon (one of my clients) for this milestone. The Narconon program has been around for more than 40 years now and has gotten tens of thousands of people off of drugs; now they have conclusive scientific proof that using the drug education materials to educate high school students on drugs will bring …

Carri Bugbee of BigDealPR wins Shorty Award

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

My friend and colleague Carri Bugbee of Big Deal PR in Portland has just won an award at the first annual Twitter awards, winning a “Shorty” award for her many tweets as fictional character @peggyolson (a character from the TV show MadMen). She’s got about 12,000 followers on Twitter, who have followed her many thousands of tweets about what she (the fictional character) is doing.

This is indeed a “Big Deal” for Carri, who just returned to Portland from a week in New York where she came out as the Twitterer who has been tweeting as Peggy Olsen. …

Google AdWords Conversion Tracking – More Than One Way to Skin a Cat

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

We manage the Google AdWords accounts for many of our clients. Tracking the results of a Google Adwords campaign is, most of the time, pretty easy. Put the conversion tracking code on their sites and let Google Analytics take care of it.

Some clients want their website to sell things, and we set up shopping carts for them. Google Analytics is great for tracking those conversions that result in a sale. Although when you track the sales directly–how many orders actually came in–it doesn’t always line up exactly with what Google Analytics tells you. But Analytics provides a pretty close …
