You've found the blog of Jere Matlock, a web designer and writer. This journal is mostly about writing, web design and getting sites to the top of the search engines (SEO is my business). It is also full of opinions and observations about pretty much everything. If these things are not of interest to you, feel free to go now. Go on, shoo!

Still here? If you have something to say, post a comment or send me an email.

By the way, if you feel like taking offense at something posted on this site, go right ahead, it won't bother me a bit. Kingsley Amis has a nice quote about that, in which I take solace and some pride when the flames arrive:

"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

Site ranks #1

Saturday, May 8th, 2004

Had a nice win today. My client, Jon P. of Candy Favorites, called me today to let me know that the SEO work we did late in 2003 and early in 2004 is finally paying off at Google. The site now ranks #1 at Google for many of his key word phrases, such as “online candy store”, “Brach’s candy” and so on. He’s elated, and it made my day too! This is a huge site with over 2600 pages, which went live in January 2004 and has had a PageRank of 5 for the last couple of months, but …

Redesigning a site or two

Wednesday, May 5th, 2004

Finished the re-design of this site: Mediations Handled. Starting in on a bunch of re-design work on another site: Free Spirit Art, by taking it out of tables and putting it into CSS, and using PHP and MySQL for keeping track of the images. So it will be easier to maintain this site once we have finished – and the owner will be able to easily add more animal art prints when I am done. When I originally designed this site, it was only supposed to have about 100 prints in it so I put them all in …

Burning midnight oil

Saturday, May 1st, 2004

After much burning of midnight oil, I have finished moving the 150 sites. What a project!

Still working on redesigning this site: MediationsHandled.com, which was truly in need of a re-design. Should have that one finished this weekend, then will be working on this one: http://www.freespiritart.com.

new hot tub!On the home front, a friend in Portland (bless him!) found a free hot tub for us, and I drove up (5 hours each way) to pick it up. Had to get the pump working, and had to plug a leak, but it is working now and we have done some excellent …
