You've found the blog of Jere Matlock, a web designer and writer. This journal is mostly about writing, web design and getting sites to the top of the search engines (SEO is my business). It is also full of opinions and observations about pretty much everything. If these things are not of interest to you, feel free to go now. Go on, shoo!

Still here? If you have something to say, post a comment or send me an email.

By the way, if you feel like taking offense at something posted on this site, go right ahead, it won't bother me a bit. Kingsley Amis has a nice quote about that, in which I take solace and some pride when the flames arrive:

"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

Rescuing this brightly-colored site

Been working on putting more photos into this site: Southern Yankee Barbeque. Sifted through about a thousand photos of barbecue rotissery trailers and pulled out a hundred to put on the site. Using a combination of tables and divs in CSS to achieve a “frame-like” format for that site – and some JavaScript to make the thumbnails become larger when moused over. The site is good in IE 5.5 and 6.0, NN 6.2 and 7.0, but breaks in NN 4.x, about which we will not worry.

Hourglass Nebula

Working on learning PHP – got two databases set up and forms working to add data to them and send out email from online forms. Nice stuff! and will be very useful to some of my clients.

Hourglass nebulaFound couple of things on the http://www.space.com website. I like the zoom view and the sun cam – with pictures of the sun updated every four hours. Remember, kids, don’t look directly at your screen! – what’s that? oh… never mind!

Working on Gloves in a Bottle site

Sunday, June 8th, 2003

Been too busy to write much. Mostly working on this site: http://www.glovesinabottle.com – which is now done. I took the site from a five-year old design into the modern era, out of tables and into CSS. It all validates against the W3C standards, too, because I didn’t want to have any problems with the site in the search engines. I am trying to get it to rank highly for the phrase “dry skin” – and I put enough content about that phrase into the site to make that ranking likely. …
