You've found the blog of Jere Matlock, a web designer and writer. This journal is mostly about writing, web design and getting sites to the top of the search engines (SEO is my business). It is also full of opinions and observations about pretty much everything. If these things are not of interest to you, feel free to go now. Go on, shoo!

Still here? If you have something to say, post a comment or send me an email.

By the way, if you feel like taking offense at something posted on this site, go right ahead, it won't bother me a bit. Kingsley Amis has a nice quote about that, in which I take solace and some pride when the flames arrive:

"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

NY Times Drowning in Red Ink

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Despite layoffs of about 500 people in 2005, the NY Times (in my opinion the most dishonest, corrupt and immoral of all American newspapers) is drowning in red ink. Here’s an article about the NY Times that has a graph showing the NY Times stock price over the last couple of years.

As one of the comments says, “Drown in red, commies!”. I had to laugh, but it’s true. It’s a socialist rag dedicated to advancing the socialist agenda through omission of valid news that might put that agenda in a bad light.

Arkansas planning suit against Eli Lily for Psych drug Zyprexa

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Here’s a good bit of news. The State of Arkansas, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, plans a lawsuit against three drug firms, including Eli Lily, for fraud over a “marketing scheme” for anti-psychotic drugs. Basically the Attorney General (Dustin McDaniel) told lawmakers Friday he’s planning a lawsuit against the makers of Zyprexa, Risperdal and Seroquel. He claims that the suit won’t cost Arkansas any money, as it’s being handled on spec by Bailey Perrin Bailey LLP of Houston. That firm is handling similar suits for a handful of other states, including Alaska, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Utah and …

Ban ADHD drugs, not Tag

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Tony Zizza writes an excellent article about how a school in Colorado has banned tag on its playground, supposedly because “some children complained they were harassed or chased against their will.” Tony says:

Ban ADHD drugs, not tag. That’s right. You would have to be a moron with a capital M if you do not realize that the emotional impact of tag on an elementary school student is a hell of a lot less severe than the emotional and physical impact ADHD drugs have on students whose minds and bodies are

What is Scientology?

Monday, September 17th, 2007

I get asked this question quite a bit: “What is Scientology?” For many years I would reply with the response I learned in the Scientology catechism over 30 years ago, when I became a minister of the Church of Scientology of California. (And yes, we do have a catechism). I would say, “Scientology is an applied religious philosophy.” Unfortunately, most people don’t seem to understand that reply, probably because they don’t know what an applied philosophy would be…. They get the same confused look they get when you reel off a bunch of buzzwords. So I …

Good luck to this teacher… she’s gonna need it!

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

A teacher in Medford, Oregon (about three hours from where we live) has a concealed weapons permit. But her school board, in its infinite wisdom, has warned her that she is not allowed to carry her weapon on school grounds. Apparently they didn’t get word of what happened at Vtech, Columbine, or up in Springfield, where a teacher with a handgun handy would have kept students alive.

The teacher wants to remain anonymous, and has the permit because she’s afraid of her ex-husband. She doesn’t want him to find her and beat her up (again). She’s got a restraining order, …

What Scientologists believe

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

No, it’s not some kooky mind-control cult. Any one of the tens of thousands of practicing Scientologists in the United States will give you his or her own viewpoint about it. If they were all mind controlled, wouldn’t they give you the same story? It’s always different, from one person to another, how they got into it and why they stayed and what they are getting out of it. They may all want to obliterate psychiatry (what sane person doesn’t!) but other than that they are all pretty different. They may send their children to schools that use …
