You've found the blog of Jere Matlock, a web designer and writer. This journal is mostly about writing, web design and getting sites to the top of the search engines (SEO is my business). It is also full of opinions and observations about pretty much everything. If these things are not of interest to you, feel free to go now. Go on, shoo!
Still here? If you have something to say, post a comment or send me an email.
By the way, if you feel like taking offense at something posted on this site, go right ahead, it won't bother me a bit. Kingsley Amis has a nice quote about that, in which I take solace and some pride when the flames arrive:
"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

One of my favorite e-newsletters is the one put out by Mark Alexander, which used to be called The Federalist and is now called The Patriot Post. He digs up some great quotes from history and this one struck a chord with me:
“Truth does not become more true by virtue of the fact that the entire world agrees with it, nor less so even if the whole world disagrees with it.” –Jewish philosopher Maimonides (AD 1135-1204)
As a long-time Scientologist I have seen a lot of false and malicious chatter about my religion online over the years. …

I am reading “The Compleated Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin”, which was compiled and published by Mark Skousen, Ph.D. The book is fascinating and picks up where Ben Franklin’s own autobiography left off in 1757, when he was just 51 years old and before all the events of the American Revolution. Franklin wrote many thousands of letters and documents, and Skousen put them together and came up with this “compleated” autobiography, which is in Franklin’s own words, but with many footnotes and explanations. As I say, it is fascinating.
Ben Franklin worked diligently in England to try to prevent Parlaiment from …

Here’s part of a statement issued by the Church of Scientology relating to the U.S. Department of Justice announcing last week the filing of federal criminal charges against Dmitriy Guzner of New Jersey, a member of the cyber-terrorist group known as Anonymous
“Since January, 2008 Anonymous has been responsible for 3.6 million harassing emails and 141 million malicious hits against Church websites, as well as 41 death threats, 56 bomb and arson threats, 103 threats of other violence and 40 incidents of vandalism against Church of Scientology staff, executives, parishioners and/or facilities. A documentary describing these acts of violence can

My old friend Fred Hare — whom I’ve known for more than 35 years, has put up a terrific little website here called “Real Self-Help“. It’s a place where people can find out about Scientology without any of the bias and lies posted about it on various hate sites online. Funny thing — you can look up just about any religion online and find hate sites. Mennonites? You bet. Catholics? Yep. Baptists? Uh-huh. Muslims? Yeah. Buddhists? Yup.
So don’t be misled by the hate sites out there — if you’ve ever been curious about …

The recent hack by a member of Anonymous of Sarah Palin’s Yahoo email account has brought some negative publicity for “Anonymous”, a loosely-knit buch of wackos who seem to exist for LULZ — a word they use for “getting their jollies” at others’ expense. This article in Wired News about Anonymous details some of their craziness and cruelty. This time the Secret Service and FBI are involved, and one would hope that the particular Anonymous character named Rubico will be tracked down and arrested for his illegal activity in hacking Sarah Palin’s email.
Up until this point, …

When I see the news with its talk of ruin, injustice, inequities (and iniquities) and failures in the world, it all seems very “gloom and doom”. Terrorism, the rise of militant Islam in the world, the impossibly high cost of health care, the high taxes, the unemployment, the failing educational system, man-made global warming etc., hurricaines, earthquakes, ad nauseum. The things that they are trying to get us to believe in so we’ll be too upset to resist their efforts at control because we’ll ASK them to come in and protect us from the bogey-men.
I try to keep my …

I subscribe to a weekly newsletter called “Optimism“, put out by Cecile Vowles of Sydney, Australia. It’s very uplifting, as the title implies, and has her marvelous humor sprinkled throughout.
Today Cecile quoted Nelson Mandella, who was apparently quoting from Marianne Williamson’s 1992 book, “A RETURN TO LOVE” :
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous ? Actually, who

A Harvard-educated neurosurgeon ( Allan J. Hamilton ) has published a new book called “The Scalpel and the Soul” speaking out about the times from his experience when patients who were clinically dead (no heartbeat, no brain waves, etc.) recorded what was going on in the operating room, word for word.
This is rather a belated validation of what Dianetics has posited since 1950; that people do record what happens to them when they are in pain and unconscious. People who have had much of our Dianetic counseling will tell you that it is very possible (and …

I have found some quotes from Churchill concerning the telling of lies, and the having of enemies, that are worth knowing. Rather than put them in an ephemeral blog post, I put them on my quotes page. These quotes are particularly relevant to the attacks currently going on around the world against the religion of Scientology by the group calling itself anonymous. When masked picketers stage world-wide protests against your religion, you have to know your religion is doing great things!

The rise of YouTube over the last couple of years has amazed me. I had no idea that videos would grow to become so popular, and to contain so many subjects. Nor did I have a clue that comments left on Social Media sites like YouTube, Stumble Upon, and Digg would grow to be so rude and misinformed.
The whole “Can’t we all just get along?” attitude of the early web seems to have been replaced with a new expression, “GTFO”, meaning “Get The F!!k Out”. So if your opinion is different than that of those who have already …
