You've found the blog of Jere Matlock, a web designer and writer. This journal is mostly about writing, web design and getting sites to the top of the search engines (SEO is my business). It is also full of opinions and observations about pretty much everything. If these things are not of interest to you, feel free to go now. Go on, shoo!
Still here? If you have something to say, post a comment or send me an email.

By the way, if you feel like taking offense at something posted on this site, go right ahead, it won't bother me a bit. Kingsley Amis has a nice quote about that, in which I take solace and some pride when the flames arrive:
"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

Antidepressants Hardly Help according to an article in Time Magazine. I rarely trust any information provided by what is usually the central mouthpiece for Big Pharma, and the trumpet of the AMA and APA, but in this case they seem to have let some actual science slip through in their reporting. Prozac, Effexor, Serzone, Paxil and Seroxat, the SSRI drugs, are basically about as effective as a placebo sugar pill for all except the most severely depressed. So why have 50 million people been taking these drugs worldwide? Because they drug companies only provide the POSITIVE results of their drug trials …

The manufacturers of Risperdal and Seroquel, widely-prescribed anti-psychotic drugs, have been sued by the Montana Attorney General for injury or deaths of Montanans.
I hope more state Attorneys General will get on this particular band-wagon. These drug companies have very deep pockets (billions of dollars of profits per year) and are using extremely aggressive marketing campaigns to get doctors to prescribe these drugs off-label, for things that they were never approved to do by the FDA. The pseudo-science of psychiatry is in bed with Big Pharma on this, and are guilty of pushing the whole “bad brain chemistry” myth, for which …

I received a press release today concerning a new book by Beverly Eakman, a whistle-blower working with CCHR, working to expose to the light how psychology has corrupted the American educational system. She says:
“I take issue with teaching methodologies whose primary purpose is to target the emotions rather than challenge the intellect.”
Walking Targets points to an agenda where “educators often think that they are using scientific methodology to transmit ‘thinking skills’ or that they are “empowering pupils to be ‘decision-makers.’”
In “Bushwhacking Johnny,” one of the 40+ articles in her book, Eakman explains that teachers should not exist to strip …

Here’s a drug ad petition to make the FDA require that drug ads on TV have a toll-free number so that people can call in and report problems they are having with those drugs being over-advertised, and requiring more of a detailed disclosure of the side effects that the drugs have, and the prevalence of those side effects.
Personally I’d like to ban all these drug ads (especially the new drugs which haven’t been around long enough to know what their long-term side effects are going to be), same as the alcohol ads and cigarette ads were banned for the public …

The online terrorist organization known as “Anonymous” has declared war on the Church of Scientology. That’s my church, and my religion. So I guess they declared war on me.
A few days ago, 17 different locations of the Church of Scientology in California received envelopes in the mail containing white powder, causing evacuations and closures of some of the buildings. I hope the FBI and Homeland Security are involved in the investigation, as this is the act of a terrorist group. What’s next? Will these anonymous hackers start burning crosses on our lawns? Breaking our windows and beating us in the …

I’ve always admired Tom Cruise. Even the infamous couch-jumping episode made me think, “Wow - to be that excited about falling in love — I remember that feeling!”, and “More power to him!” In every photo of Katie Holmes that I have seen, she looks radiantly happy and in love.
So now there’s a new unauthorized biography of Tom Cruise by the same jerk who published an unauthorized bio of Princess Diana. He makes a whole slew of allegations that I won’t honor by repeating here. Instead, here are some facts:
The author of this unauthorized bio is British, but …

This blog, http://hsi.sharpseo.com/, aka “HCI On the Spot”, is written by Michele Cagan of the Health Sciences Institute. Her blog (recently, anyway) focuses on problems with forced administration of vaccinations in New Jersey and Maryland to preschoolers. Maryland and New Jersey, in their infinite wisdoms, have decreed that no matter what the parents say, they WILL vaccinate them against the flu and other diseases. They have put the full force of the law behind this, backing it up with state troopers. They should change the signs on the freeways as you enter the states of NJ and MD, to “Welcome …

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Psychiatry (a misnomer, as there are no statistics in it) currently lists 370 types of mental illness. It all sounds so scientific, until you find out that they vote (using a simple show of hands) to add new “mental diseases” to the DSM. Here’s a terrific video about the DSM that explains the scam. The reason they have so many kinds of mental diseases is so that they can bill insurance companies (and the government) for their “treatment” and for the drugs being pushed by the pharmaceutical companies.

Here’s a great report from Sean Hannity of Fox News, about the dangers of giving kids anti-depressant drugs like Paxil.

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is a group to which I’ve belonged and which I’ve helped to support financially for about 35 years.
One of my nephews was put on psychiatric drugs as a teenager. He immediately quit being an honor student and star swimming athlete, and became a zoned-out zombie for the next five years, incapable of feeling much of anything. Frankly it was a terrifying experience for his mother (my sister) and the rest of our family. Why was he put on psych drugs? Because of the say-so of a school counselor when he was reported …
